On a recent tour of many old and abandoned rail sites in western Pennsylvania, our exploration group found itself far up in the hills near Clarion, PA, among the beautiful colors of the changing fall leaves in search of a rail line that had been built originally by the Franklin and Clearfield Railroad in 1909. The line had once tunneled through this rugged area and spanned the wide Clarion River, had gone through several owners in its nearly 100-year-plus existance, only to have been dismantled and left to the elements back in 1988 by Conrail. The line we found on this trip had no existing rails left, but one of the tunnels and the bridge were still accessible on this adventure. The tunnel we ventured through, one of three on the line, was in fairly sad shape. The entrance had at one point caved in, sending the face of the tunnel crumbling down so that we had to clamber over what was left to enter the tunnel. The 1726 feet we walked eventually opened out onto the long 125 foot+ trestle that still crosses the Clarion River. As much as we wanted to, we did not attempt a crossing (or a full descent to the bottom) on this trip; the rain and conditions of many of the ties, the mud on the sides of the valley a sincere desire to make it back to Cleveland in one piece prevailed, which only means a return is in the books for a warmer and dryer part of the coming year! In any case, the second tunnel across the span was said to be completely flooded and largely impassible; I suppose we'll have to investigate another time to find out! Because of those factors (plus an underestimation of the lighting I had brought), my footage was not all that I would have liked, so for now, I'll call this a "highlights" reel of the tunnel and trestle.
