Tom has fished this particular fly pattern for over 20 years on the White River and Norfork tailwaters. After fishing this fly pattern for a couple of years, Tom started noticing the molting colors of the sowbugs and scuds to have a lighter underbody, leading him to believe the straight sand antron for the dubbing works better for both of these fly patterns. The other blends of dubbing that have been developed over the years are just too dark. The transition between the sand antron, light color, and the dark brown swiss straw rotating in the current has led him to trust that this is the best materials to use. Fishing side by side with someone else he has always found the lighter colors have worked the best on numbers and sizes of fish. This sowbug pattern has caught many trout in his guiding career, even some big brown trout on the White River basin. To date, his biggest trout on this particular pattern is a 18-20lb brown trout on a size 16. He was a monster! Tom modified this sowbug pattern as a simple fly pattern for others to learn to tie for themselves. It is a natural food source that trout eat every day. They range from #18-#12 in fly hook sizes.
